About

A descriptive alt text

The Young Activists Summit was launched by dev.tv in 2019, in collaboration with the United Nations Office at Geneva, Swiss TV (RTS), and the Graduate Institute. Back then, in the post-#MeToo era, the idea was to highlight and bring together outstanding female activists to showcase that women drive great progress all around the world.

The first edition saw very promising results in terms of visibility and outcomes for the Activists, which led the organizers to hold a Young Activists Summit (YAS) every year. A number of prominent public figures have taken part, including Angelina Jolie and Prince Albert II of Monaco. In just five years, YAS has evolved from being an annual conference, to a year-round platform that empowers its Laureates by connecting them with decision-makers, providing them with training, supporting them in raising funds, and maximizing their visibility.

The Young Activists Summit also serves as a global platform for youth (30,000 young people reached across 174 countries so far) to come together, get informed about global challenges, learn from each other, and get inspired to take action. YAS drives impact on the ground all throughout the year by supporting its Activists to carry out field projects in their communities (e.g. underground schools for girls in Afghanistan, coral restoration in French Polynesia, etc).

Impact

Thousands of beneficiaries reached through YAS

As an example, #YAS21 Laureate Jose Quisocala has empowered 8,500 kids in Peru to attend school instead of working in the streets, a significant increase from the 2,500 before YAS.

28 field projects implemented

28 field projects have been implemented in 23 countries, including a health centre for street children in the DRC, and reading corners and books featuring black characters in South Africa.

30 Activists empowered

Since 2019, 30 Activists from all parts of the world have been honoured and supported by YAS.

International opportunities and visibility

Many previous Laureates have received other international awards and been invited to high-level conferences or programmes thanks to YAS (e.g. Rebecca Kabuo was invited to speak at the UN Security Council, Pashtana Durrani won the Global Citizen Prize, etc).

Presidential recognition

The President of Chile officially congratulated environmental activist, Sebastian Benfeld on his YAS award. So did the Government of Malawi for child rights activist, Memory Banda.
