Fighting sexual abuse and empowering girls

About

Fiona Amony is a Ugandan activist fighting against sexual abuse and for girls’ empowerment. She has actively shed light on the fact that thousands of Ugandan school girls were impregnated and/or married off during the Covid-19 lockdown. During the pandemic, she ran a call center to report cases of gender-based violence and economic exclusion. Within a month, Fiona filed more than 100 reported cases of sexual assault and harassment.

Work

In her mission to fight gender-based violence, Fiona Amony hosted a radio program that lifts the lid on violence against women and discusses solutions to tackle it.

She supports police and health workers in conducting community dialogues on gender violence and holds meetings with religious and cultural leaders on the topic.

To reach a wider audience, Fiona publishes information, education and communication materials on sexual and gender-based violence.
