Vanessa Nakate
Advocating for climate action
About
Vanessa Nakate is a prominent figure in the global youth movement advocating for climate action through school strikes. In 2019, she started a climate activist movement in Uganda with her individual strike outside parliament to oppose the passivity of governments in the face of climate change. Since then, she has spoken at global summits, including the World Economic Forum in Davos, urging companies, banks and governments to immediately stop subsidizing fossil fuels.
Work
Vanessa leverages her platform to champion climate justice for all communities, and focuses on those hardest hit by climate change. She established the Rise Up Movement to amplify the voices of African climate activists. Vanessa also initiated a project to equip rural Ugandan schools with solar panels. Additionally, Vanessa authored ‘A Bigger Picture’, a manifesto advocating for inclusive climate action.
